Recall by Sound

Isn't it weird how a sound will bring back a specific memory or feeling from a time long past? The first time I noticed this was in the 90's when I heard Toto's 'Rosana'. The summer that came out I was an 8th grader and spent an enourmous amount of time at our neighborhood pool. It was a great summer. I was ususally up by 9am and off to the local arcade for a few dollars worth of Donkey Kong. Then I went back home to cook up a frozen pizza (Tony's Pepporoni). Finally off to the pool for the rest of the day.

This morning as I walked from my car to my office (long walk) I heard the nearby military base sound off a bugle call. This brought me back to my days in the Air Force. This bugle call would always go off a few minutes before the day officially began. By officially I meant the raising of our flag. Although highly discouraged, the bugle initiated many people to run to their next location. They did this so they wouldn't 'get caught' outside. This is because during the raising or lowering of the flag the national anthem is played. Once this begins, all personnel outside are expect to stop, come to attention and salute in the direction of the base flag pole. It usually last 2-3 minutes. I never ran. I love that song. It always puts a lump in my throat. What a great feeling of pride to be a part of something so great.

I hear songs that take me back to 6th grade roller skating at Rollerland on Friday nights - like "Radar Love". For you younger kids and those not raised in Fort Worth, Rollerland was on Altamesa - I think it may be some sort of roller blade hockey deal now - or it may be closed down. It is on Altamesa down from the Big Lots (at Woodway). That used to be a really nice shopping center with neat restaurants in it. Where Chicken Express/Arby's/etc. sits now used to be a cool restaurant (they tore the building down) - I think it was Shakey's Pizza or something like that....a real trendy, cool pizza place. That was probably around the late 70's.

And so concludes your SW Fort Worth history lesson for today.

Rollerland became and Armbrister's hardware store for a while but now it is Lone Star Gym. Do you remember Jo-ed's Bomber? It was a little sandwich shop where the tattoo shop is now.....Wasn't the pizza place Pizza Inn? Maybe it was Shakees - Do you remember The Brittney? You ordered your food on a phone at the table - Preston worked there during high school...Sorry Brian, you probably didn't intend for this to become a FW history lesson...Your message of being a proud American kinda got lost on the Roller Skating Rink!

Oh, I saw the billboard the other day and was also perplexed....Is it a Old-time-Church-of-Christ dig at women? Surely not!

Sting's "Every Move You Make" reminds me of my first summer living at the beach.

Yes to Jo-Ed's Bomber. I remember the Brittney - but I had forgotten the name of it. It was on the corner where IHOP is now, right? Didnt it have either two floors or a split level set-up? I don't think the pizza place started out as a Pizza Inn - though it may have ended up that way. Remember what a neat building it was? I remember when they tore it down thinking it was just too neat of a place to tear down. Progress, I guess.

Sorry, Brian...I HAD to respond to Wezie's Fort Worth history comments. If you wanna know some southwest Fort Worth history - get Frank Laminack involved. That guy remembers stuff...plus he's pretty hitorical himself, if you get my drift!
